<<Dennis, it has been my impression that Paul became an apostle shortly after the crucification of Jesus rather than "hundreds" of years and that his letters to the various new Christian groups were inspired by the teachings of Jesus himself as passed along by the disciples who had direct contact with Christ>>

The earliest gospel was written approximately 85 years after Christ died. Paul never personally knew Jesus nor did he know any of the apostles including Peter. I will try to find a better timeline this weekend.

Erase Hate,
Dennis

You're right -- they were pretty much written late in the first century, but they were also passed around and copied many times and probably edited before they were put into what we now accept as the standard Biblical collection (and how that came about is a fascinating subject for another time.) But if I am recalling my Biblical history correctly, there is no evidence that Paul ever met or knew Jesus, so everything he knew was already at least second hand.
