The most hated people in america will indeed be those that profit by purchasing puts or going short before or during the great crash. Maybe the masses will go the route of indonesia and outlaw short selling. Or go back and take any profits a short seller makes. A "short" tax of sorts.

In any case, as someone on the bears den thread mentioned, a highly profitable bear would be well advised to lay low during the aftermath.

The mob will want blood. They'll either get it through jailing VCs/analysts/pimps/sluts, or they might scapegoat the shorts. In any event, a LOT of people are going to be very angry. The only other choice is to admit they were suckers in the largest ponzi scheme earth has ever seen. I don't think they'll do the latter until they run out of external forces they can blame.

(the vast majority of consumer fraud goes unreported because people are afraid of admitting they were gullible fools for being taken in the first place)
