dumbmoney,

<A 64-bit extension to x86 makes sense for the same reasons the 32-bit extension made sense. Customers value compatibility and smooth upgrade paths. That is, after all, why the "ugly" x86 has been so successful.

If the x86 continues to be popular, and there's no reason to think that it won't, eventually 64-bits of addressing will be demanded by the market. And if Intel doesn't do it, someone else will.>

Good, succinct answer!

Chuck

Can't win. Intel comes up with a more "elegant" approach, and now it's not our favorite ol' "ugly" x86. Sigh.

I don't know man. This is really not my area, but since you and Chuck brought this up, I went and talked to some people. x86 extensions for 64 bits is apparently not the natural progression that one might think, as least not at this time. Maybe in the future, but apparently not right now. Wrong approach for the current landscape.

Hopefully some folks that are more educated on this subject will extend this debate. All I have to go by is a nascent sense of things based on some preliminary discussions with some architecture people.
