I think, the thought process is thus: If the Japanese economy turns up, the global market expands, and the US can ultimately sell more, to relatively wealthy customers.

This line of reasons jumps over the initial response, which I concur is negative for the US markets, due to intial capital flight out of US assets, to a potentially higher growth economy. Actually, this in fact could be very healthy for the US. It could provide the soft landing needed to deflate the equities bubble!
