I never tried to read her. I think that the whole spiritualist movement of those days was a product of the excessive concentration of the world's wealth in Europe (driven largely by colonial enterprises such as the British opium trade), which left a large population of lazy people with far too much money and far too little to occupy their attention.

There are parallels with the modern "New Age" movements.
