Actually, the write-off of in-process R&D is correct accounting. R&D should be expensed when incurred, not capitalized. What the SEC got annoyed at was excessive valuation of the in-process R&D that resulted in almost the entire purchase price being written off all at once (little to no goodwill to charge against future earning).
