Les, that's true. For example, when gas prices dropped significantly in terms of real dollars from the 1980 timeframe, people "upgraded" to gas guzzlers such as the Ford Expedition. <g>

As I recall, when the embargo hit in the early 70s, the move to higher gas mileage cars was slow, but it did happen through about 1983-5 timeframe. Plus, people modified their driving behavior somewhat -- the RV boom collapsed, for example.

However, this latest blip ain't nothin' since the real cost of gas is still about 1/2 of the 1980 high (even around Seattle with it's $1.50 per gallon cost). And last weekend was supposed to be the 2nd busiest driving weekend, ever. So people are driving lower gas mileage cars (relatively speaking) and they are driving more than ever with gas prices up at the pump. Hmmmmm.
