Dow Jones story @ 1:14pm on WITC:
13:14 DJ =DJ Web Rumor Of Goldman Buyout Lifts Shares of Wit Capital
NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--A rumor that has Goldman Sachs Group Inc. (GS)
acquiring Wit Capital (WITC) has given a lift to Wit's shares Thursday.
The rumor was published on the Jagnotes.com financial Web site and saysthat
Goldman will acquire Wit, an online investment bank and brokerage firm, for
$30 a share. Goldman already owns a minority stake in Wit.
Susan Berkowitz, the senior vice president of marketing for Wit, declinedto
comment on the Goldman rumor. A spokeswoman for Goldman wasn't immediately
available for comment. But so far, other than the stock activity, there is
little to indicate that there is any substance behind the rumor.
Recently, Wit's shares were up 1 7/8, or 10.9%, at 19 1/16. Volume,though,
has been lackluster: about 738,700 shares have traded so far, compared with
average daily volume of 1.85 million shares.
