Some say that John may have been around when Christ was crucified. Not that he was present, but he may have spoken with eyewitnesses.

This is the time period where bible literalists are on a slippery slope. Of course, there was no bible until 325 A.D. It begs the question, how did people practice their faith? Through tradition, of course.

I always enjoy reminding Calvinists and other literalists that the bible they take so literally is a gift to them from the Catholic Church. Lovingly preserved through the centuries by scribes and monks, it is theirs now. It always seems to irritate them.
