MACD trading can be applied to most any timing scenario. In this case, IMHO, the trader was using a very short term indicator. Therefore, when the buying pressure ceased, the MACD turned negative and the selling began.

You are correct in your assessment that they were both long the stock, at lower levels, and shorted at higher levels. A short sale cannot be placed on a down tick, so the only way to drive a stock that you are short lower is to sell stock that you are simultaneously long at the bid.
