Tom was a politician, and this nation was/is lousy with hardcore Puritans. He was probably playing his audience. But I can't prove that obviously.
The only thing I do know is that if the press had asked him about that servant girl he would have NEVER said "i did not have relations with that woman". He'd'a grinned from ear to ear and say "I shagged her rotten!"

I hate to argue with an ally, but I think it is well known that Jefferson was a Deist isn't it? After all, he wrote his own bible with all references to miraculous events removed.

You seem to know a lot about the bible. Is the existence of the trinity stated in the new testament? I know there are references to the Father, Son and Holy Ghost but does it ever say that these are 3 persons are in one God?
