All Aboard On the message boards: Unify rides Linux wave Also: The buzz on Internet Capital By Shawn Langlois, CBS MarketWatch Last Update: 5:35 PM ET Sep 9, 1999 NewsWatch Join the discussion That pesky Linux craze just won't go away. As shares of Red Hat (RHAT: news, msgs) continue to explore the unknown, companies like Corel (CORL: news, msgs) and Applix (APLX: news, msgs) have also enjoyed some nice gains. The Linux party was in full swing when Unify decided to arrive fashionably late. Shares of Unify (UNFY: news, msgs) soared 21 percent when news of an extended relationship with Red Hat hit the tape. The big pop really didn't come as much of a surprise to investors on the message boards. See related story. SilverD19 saw it coming on Yahoo: "The exposure and recognition of Unify is now huge. Wall St. is starting to realize what we've known for awhile ...UNFY has rock solid fundamentals, and is undervalued." ClaimDigger wasn't about to sell on the news: "Today's run up is obviously inspired by the Linux/Red Hat hype, but, even at 23, UNFY still sells for just 28 times estimated earnings for this year, and estimates have been seen to be consistently low. With e-wave kicking in, it is still a value play. Usually, on these spikes, it's a good idea to shed some shares, but I think I will hold onto mine." CBS MarketWatch Columns Updated: 9/9/99 3:57:44 PM ET On Raging Bull, Carltrade shared his excitement: "This company has earnings, it's involved in e-commerce, it's got strong products in Linux, NT, Unix and Java, plus it's in the top TEN In Americanïs Fastest Growing Companies according to a report in September's Individual Investor Magazine. What else do you want?" Unify may have arrived late, but Jjs64, on Silicon Investor, predicted that this Linux coattailer will be hanging around long after the other guests have headed on home: "The best part is that UNFY, unlike CORL and APLX, actually has the numbers (EPS and sales) to support a higher price, while APLX, ADSP, CORL, are over inflated and doomed to collapse." Who knows where the euphoric world of Red Hat and Linux will take investors? While some bears who decided to short these stocks due to the hype are sweating it out, Linux believers continue to mutter their "I told ya so's."
