Semico lowers forecast for 1999 semiconductor revenue growth

Semico Research Corp. has lowered its 1999 revenue forecast for the worldwide semiconductor market to approximately $140 billion, representing 12% growth from last year's level.

The revised outlook-down from an earlier projection of 16%-reflects lower-than-expected average selling prices for certain "microperipherals," such as mass-storage ICs and PC chipsets, in the first half of the year, as well as the delayed ramp of Direct Rambus DRAM, according to Jim Feldhan, an analyst with the Phoenix-based market research firm.

With strong demand returning to most chip segments, Semico believes the market will grow another 18% in 2000, to $165.8 billion. But as capacity tightens, a new round of major capital investments could throw the market back into a brief period of oversupply by 2002, Semico said.

Applications driving growth are wireless, telecommunications, cable TV, and Internet infrastructure, the research firm said.
