Here's an interesting perspective on the gene companies:

Basically complaining that the 1st tier gene companies are getting all the attention. (Haven't I heard that complaint somewhere else before? <g>)

I notice that he throws VGIN into the "gene" pot.

Interesting that INCY finally participated. I still own some, but had lightened up some when it seemed that the market had given them up for lost.

One of the hardest balancing acts in biotech investing is to weigh the relative merits of "I think this is a good company and I don't care if it takes the market 5 years to figure it out" and the "gene companies are hot this week" schools. There isn't a good answer to this of course - the best you can do is stay flexible and not get locked into any one approach.
