Avid takes DS to HD
Avid Technology (stands 2.112 and 2.212) has announced its first nonlinear finishing system dedicated to HDTV production - Softimage DS HD, writes Carolyn Giardina.
The system combines the DS version 3.0 interface and features with HD capabilities for conforming and finishing of programs in uncompressed HDTV as well as uncompressed ITU-601 resolutions.

The product is expected to enter beta testing before the end of the year with first customer shipments anticipated in the second quarter of 2000. The first release of the system is expected to provide support for HDTV formats including 1080I, 1080P and 720P - and to support 24, 30, 60 and 29.97 frame rates.

The system configuration includes DS software, an Avid real-time HD I/O board, Avid storage and a yet to be announced workstation. Avid director of product marketing Michael Stojda says this would not be the current DS platform - Intergraph's StudioZ GT workstation, as this does not run high definition.

DS HD is being developed to use Avid's Total Conform feature to conform projects originated in DS. It is also being designed to conform and finish projects created on Avid's Media Composer and Symphony systems.

It will offer the same creative tools found in DS version 3.0, which launches this week at IBC and is scheduled to ship by year's end.

This new release features a new process tree interface for compositing, the ability to mix and match media of different resolutions within a project, a new 3D DVE and titling engine, new keying tools and real-time keyers, extensive user interface enhancements and performance improvements throughout the system.
