I totally agree lost1. Historical fiction is the best, and sometimes just plain history can be great! I read a biography on Queen Elizabeth recently, fascinating. But anyway Cold Mountain is good, but again, a love story primarily so if that gives you the heebie jeebies, stay away. A lot of excellent historical accuracy apparently too, for example.. when Inman (protagonist) encounters mixed race people, he refers to them as "quadroon" or "octaroon"... (quadroon meaning one grandparent was black, octaroon referring to great-grandparent) apparently historically accurate... also when farming occasional indian arrowheads are discovered, indian artifacts are all over the place... also accurate as I understand it... so the author did a fair amt of research into this book.
