John, this article correctly points out many of the delays, risks and problems along the way. It was clearly written before Intel's live demonstration last week of a real Merced workstation running real applications. This demonstration we a real boost for Intel and HP. It shows that Merced is real and gives credence to the promises of a mid 2000 delivery. It was a MAJOR accomplishment for Intel to demonstrate a real system before a live audience only 2-3 weeks after first silicon. The difficulty of pulling this off can not be over stated. It was perhaps unprecedented and shows that Merced is well along in the debug phase.

John - Re: "This article in Forbes indicates problems with Merced. This seems contrary to latest posts on this board. What is your take on this article?"

Basically, the article is a HATCHET job - and completely out of date.

MERCED WORKS - PERIOD.

It was late - so what - all of Merced's competitors ARE or WERE late.

And MERCED's competitors - Alpha is a comercial FAILURE and UltraSParc III - due in mid 1998 - won't even ship until LATE THIS YEAR - over 1 1/2 years LATE !.

HP is touting their upcoming NEW PA-RISC chips - now all they have to do is DESIGN THEM !

That puts Merced in excellent shape.

My guess is that Merced will be a runaway hit - technically and financially, although Merced's successors will probably produce the bulk of the financial success.
