Quantum gets an award... [that and a $1.50 will get you a cup at Starbucks] ( BW)(CA-QUANTUM)(QNTM) Quantum Selected by CIO Magazine as One of 100 Companies Most Likely to Excel in 21st Century; Award Recognizes Innovative Thinking, Strong Consumer Vision and Care for Employees Business Editors/High-Tech Writers MILPITAS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 9, 1999--Quantum Corporation has been named by CIO Magazine as one of 100 international companies most likely to succeed in the 21st Century. The CIO-100 award spotlights firms that have demonstrated innovation in their business practices and focused on enabling people both within and outside the enterprise to work in a strategic and creative way. Quantum is the only independent storage company to have been selected in this year's awards, which included firms from Finland, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Curt Francis, vice president of Corporate Development, said, "This award recognizes Quantum as a company which embraces creative thinking, believes in the necessity of a world-class IT infrastructure, and understands that employees are the key to its success. We see the award as recognizing the people who have together created an IT environment that provides such a remarkable foundation for our competitiveness in the 21st century." During 1999, Quantum has completed a number of major IS projects, including standardizing its worldwide corporate data network to a single system and rolling out global 8-digit dial and voice mail system. Future projects include an enterprise project to replace Quantum's customer service and repair application, and expanding a comprehensive e-business platform for business-to-business over the Internet. Francis added, "Quantum is one of just a few companies today with a genuinely unified, world-class global IS infrastructure providing a platform for further developments, including e-commerce and e-fulfillment. The IS function plays a highly strategic role in the corporation's planning process. We are tightly focused on enabling Quantum to achieve its goal of being a leader in the next generation of technology-based enterprises, allowing us to participate at the forefront of Internet and Intranet commerce." Paul Roman, vice president of Information Services and acting chief information officer at Quantum said, "The CIO award is very much focused on people, and I believe it recognizes that Quantum has both the people and the systems in place to implement great technology in the future. For example, our project team system allows the IS organization to access the talents and skills of the entire company in a flexible way. This system, which is also used in other organization throughout the company, brings diverse individuals together as a dedicated team to accomplish a particular goal or initiative." Roman also cites Quantum's philosophy of generating an 'extraordinary environment' as a basis for the award. "By this we mean encouraging an atmosphere where everyone contributes towards the success of the company. Quantum's values form the framework of an environment where employees are empowered to use their talents and energy to the full." Quantum is also a winner of Fortune Magazine's 1998 100 Best Places to Work awards -- the first and only storage company to achieve this recognition. Now in its twelfth year, the CIO-100 awards focus on companies' ability to survive and succeed in the new millennium. Winners of this year's CIO-100 were selected through a three-step process. First, a panel of 18 distinguished academicians, consultants and analysts nominated the companies they felt exemplified CIO magazine's criteria for being well-positioned to succeed beyond 2000. Second, CIO magazine staff conducted extensive research on the nominees. Finally, a team of CIO editors and writers voted on the 100 companies they felt best matched the requirements.
