I hope the rest of my prediction turns out to be wrong.

There may be a small window of opportunity, if Wiranto et al are really in control of the situation on the ground. I think he can consider that he's made his point to would-be secessionists in Aceh and Irian Jaya, and that it is safe to back off. Meaning maybe he will rein in the boys, stop the mess that's going on now, which would be enough to forestall immediate intervention.

Then back to the status quo, for a breathing space, at least. Then down to the real problem of how to accommodate the aspirations of the Timorese without setting the whole thing on fire again.

We will know within days if he can do this (I think he will try). But in no way have we seen the last of this.

I still think the referendum was a dumb idea.
