I want you to tell me that you can explain to a baby, in terms that it finds persuasive and convincing, why it makes logical sense for them to go to the doctor and get shots, and why that is not simply "cruel and vicious." You explain it to the best of their ability to understand. They still cry. As they grow you give them better and better explanations. Organized religion is still passing around explanations appropriate to 6 year olds. We may not be able to understand God - it there is one - but we can understand a whole lot more than what we're being told. I think we made it all up. Possibly not a God - there may or may not be one, I see no credible evidence in either direction - but all of the various myths that attempt to explain or interpret the divine intent.
