KZ,

But can you imagine the gall of the person who posted

Since the page was updated 8/27, I'd venture a guess that they probably know a lot more about it than Carl.

Think about it. Think about Dell. Think about Intel. Think about Samsung. Think about Compaq. Think about Sony. Think about Nintendo. Think about all the collective intelligence that has driven those companies to the tops of their markets. Think about the hundreds of people at those companies working on the issue of providing the best performance and product longevity to their customers.

Then think about Carl.

Doesn't really balance the see-saw, does it?

I'm not trying to rag on Carl, he's probably a good engineer. But everyone can make mistakes. And the weight of support by these companies in this case leans way over in the direction of the mistake being his.

Dave

KZNerd,

But can you imagine the gall of the person who posted this: "One-half the power of a comparable PC100 SDRAM system" on their website?
rambus.com

That looks a very reasonable claim by Rambus on their website. After all, they are referring to system power consumption, not the maximum power consumption of individual chips.

Bilow was comparing individual chips (and perhaps using old data). However, in a single channel Rambus system only one chip will be operating at full power at a time, whereas with SDRAM 8 chips will be turned on simultaneously for a 64 bit read (assuming 8 bit chips).

So even if the power consumption of individual Rambus chips is a little higher when active, the system power consumption can be much lower.

This also means that a Rambus system places fewer peak current demands on the power supply, allowing lower cost regulators and lower value decoupling capacitors, thereby saving money.

John

This explains why Rambus refer to a heat spreader on the RIMMS rather than a heat sink (although it is this of course).
