Amex joins bandwagon, unveils global card

American Express has announced the launch of its globally valid American Express rupee billed cards. Mr. Sanjay Rishi, Vice-President and Country Manager, American Express Travel Related Services, said that the global-validity status would enable Indian customers to get a world-class card from a brand that is internationally familiar.

American Express charge and credit cards provide not only worldwide acceptance at merchant locations but also special offers and value for card members during travel abroad. In addition to this, it also offers flexibility in payment.

With the introduction of global validity on American Express cards, consumers can get a unique combination of global acceptance and global benefits, said Mr. Rishi. These include acceptance at millions of establishments and access to thousands of ATMs worldwide.

A double membership reward points scheme will be available for all overseas usage as well as for stay at any Oberoi group hotel in India. Under the scheme, for every Rs 40 spent on the card, the card member will earn two reward points and win free shopping and dining facilities etc.

Apart from this, under the global validity status, special savings offers will also be available at leading hotels, retail establishments, car rental companies and phone services worldwide. Already special offers are available at Hilton Hotels and resorts worldwide. Howard Johnson Hotels, USA, Tommy Hilfiter stores, Hertz car rentals and free global calling card with free calling time worth around Rs 650.

Exclusive travel privileges are also available for card members from any of 22 American Express Travel Network locations in 17 cities in India. These benefits include discounts on published fares for international travel, doubling of membership, reward points on air travel, free airport transfer, free prepaid calling card with international tickets, free flight accident insurance on domestic and international travel and savings on hotel stay and car rentals.

According to Mr. Rishi, global validity is one more step in the company's plans to expand its card business in India. In addition to these special privileges, the company will continue to offer the packaged offers through its other range of products, including gold card, personal finance services and American Express credit card under the umbrella of Best Value cards.

These offers include no pre-set spending limit under American Express Personal Charge and Gold Cards, travel and entertainment expense management solutions to corporations through American Express Corporate Card. Besides, the Amex credit card offers the lowest interest rate, balance transfer facility and renewal fee waiver option, said Mr. Rishi.
