Excellent. I think I agree about 100 percent (probably since you didn't mention the Gipper a single time!).

I am inclined, though, to believe Indonesia is more ripe for balkanization than all of us might imagine. Seems inevitable -- often, we scratch our heads and say, "Why didn't we see this coming?" or "How did this happen so fast?"

Appreciate you keeping us up to date as time (and language) permit.

Very well said, Steven. I don't know why you don't say why you think what you think more often, it was very well done. I admit I don't know anything about the issue, and really would prefer to keep it that way, but I do have one question. It is difficult for me to understand the motivation behind what appears to be an ethnic conflict unless there is something of value at stake, perhaps territory. You talked about pride, and saving face, and the unwillingness to back down from a conflict, but you didn't talk about what of a material nature is at stake, and what of a material nature the Indonesian military hope to gain.
