Amy and thread,

Courtesy of Stuart Steele of the Rambus thread:

"Taiwan Motherboard with 820 Chipset Appears on Open Display.
The 820 is a new chipset for the Pentium III processor that is currently in the final stages of development by its manufacturer, U.S.-based Intel Corp. Sales and shipments of the new Pentium III are scheduled to start sometime towards the end of this month. The main features of the 820 chipset are that it employs a direct rambus DRAM main memory and is compatible with the accelerated graphics port (AGP) 4x."

Amy - Re: '. Why can't Lucent and Intel+Microsoft just squeeze Cisco out over time? "

I'm sure the brainiacs over on the AMD thread have been wondering this for years about Intel !!!

re: "is Cisco really needed in 10 years when there's Lucent on the high-end"

Cisco seems to me to be viewed as a Sacred Cow - endowed with a tremendous P/E ratio. They have grown their business really well, establishing their own standards - and buying up technology companies at a hefty pace to augment their own (weak ?) R & D .

Whatever. they have been extremely successful and I view them as the WINNER in the networking market, much as Intel is the winner in the CPU market.

My point was that Intel may have to choose - in time - to be a component supplier to this industry OR a competitor in that industry.
