re: 9999 maybe

Here, we had a cable TV failure which was quickly repaired, and several areas lost electricity(also quickly fixed) from what was reported as "limbs blown across power lines" despite very low wind speeds in a region which often has wind speeds in excess of 70mph.

spin,spin,spin.

Bill Kobalt, you are correct that the 9999 used as a shutdown flag
for an End Of Job marker was apples and oranges to a date bug.

Most likely those vast number of politicans that ask and receive for a
positive account of the Y2K bug also ask for ways to convince the public
that all is ok and will be ok.

They just implemented one of the ideas received in that 9999 thing.

The politicans used the news media to do the dirty work of putting out
a story of a possible chaos to happen on 9/9/99 because they knew
that anything like this pulls in views and increases the ratings.

The news media sucked up this story and ran it rather than real and
more important events because of its increased entertainment value
which increase views and those ratings and price of a commerical.

The news media won, the politicans won with the following news.

"Citizens more at ease with the Y2K computer problem because they saw
how good the 9999 compter date bug was handled to prevent chaos, giving
them confidence that if the Y2K bug is handled in the same way then all
will be ok."

Sad that not only were 99% of citizens fooled, but some politicans now
think the Y2K is now extra dealt with in a good way.
