American Power Conversion Expands Highly Efficient Three-Phase On-Line Power

APC's Patented Technology and Customized Service Programs Help Increase System

Availability and Reduces UPS's Total Cost of Ownership

WEST KINGSTON, R.I., Sept. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- American Power Conversion (APC) today announced that it is expanding its North American offering of the industry's most efficient three-phase on-line power protection solutions with 240 and 320 kVA/kW units. Both uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) possess the patented, highly reliable Delta Conversion On-line(TM) technology. This latest generation of three-phase technology, which is well-established in both facility and IT environments, was designed more specifically for current and future technology applications than the 30-year-old double-conversion UPS technology currently offered by other UPS vendors. "Adding the 240 and 320 kW products to our North American Silcon DP300E three- phase line-up enables our facilities and MIS customers to have the best of both worlds: the convenience of dealing with one UPS vendor and service provider for all of their power protection needs in addition to obtaining the Legendary Reliability(TM) for which APC is recognized worldwide," said Dwight Sperry, general manager of APC's Facilities and Datacenter Group. "The Silcon DP300E's superior technology coupled with APC's comprehensive service program offer customers one of the lowest total cost of ownership equations in the industry."

With Delta Conversion On-line's power factor corrected input and high efficiency, costs associated with electrical infrastructure equipment, installation, and day-to-day operation are significantly less than double- conversion UPSs. In fact over a five-year timeframe, operational cost savings alone often can pay for the UPS itself.

UPS and generator sizing is also more economical with the Silcon DP300E. This generator set friendly unit requires a generator to be only 1.3 times the size of the UPS, unlike double-conversion UPSs that demand generators three- to-five times the size.

The Silcon DP300E is a robust solution that helps ensure high availability of both building and IT systems. Rated for full output in kW, Silcon DP300E units are designed to support new, high power factor computer loads and provide 20 to 30 percent more power protection capacity than double-conversion UPSs. Unlike double-conversion UPSs, Delta Conversion On-line's efficiency reduces heat loss, which in turn minimizes the stress on UPS components, increasing the reliability of the unit. Additionally, the scalability of the product is ideal for growing companies, enabling up to nine units to be placed in a parallel configuration. Nine 320 kW UPSs would provide 2.88 megawatts of protection. When configured for N+1, N+2 or N+3 redundancy, facilities managers can rest assured that their load is fully protected.

Additionally, the Silcon DP300E 240 and 320 kW units have a separate set of input terminals for the built-in static bypass switch. In the unlikely event of UPS problems, this feature enables the UPS to transfer the load to an alternative source of power without interruption.

In addition to offering advanced battery monitoring which tracks battery data to maximize battery life, the Silcon DP300E 240 and 320 kW units include APC's Web/SNMP Management Card to improve UPS troubleshooting capabilities. With its industry-recognized, standards-based protocols, such as Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP), Telnet and Web technology, the APC Web/SNMP Management Card allows users to identify potential problems quickly and manage all APC devices via Web browsers and industry-leading management platforms including HP OpenView, Tivoli Enterprise, and CA Unicenter TNG.

Silcon DP300E 240 and 320 kW customers can choose from an assortment of service programs that leverage APC's decade-long service experience in the network power protection industry and Silcon's more than 30 years service experience in mainframe and facilities UPS systems.

APC's comprehensive suite of professional services offer customized products designed to meet the varying availability needs of today's corporations as well as industry-recognized service responsiveness.

APC's Silcon DP300E 240 and 320 kW units are currently available in Europe, Middle East and Africa as well as most Asian and Latin American countries and will be available in North America during the fourth quarter 1999.
