But if you don't take the ticket in all you have is an asset that has appreciated to $X MM. You don't get the check until you cash the ticket in. I have grain in the elevator now and could sell it with a phone call but if I call them and sell it today and tell them not to issue a check until next January then the income is Y2K.

Seems the ticket is the same as a stock. I've got a bunch of AMAT that has gone from $29 to $79. I don't get taxed on it until I sell it.
