jbk, Excellent analysis. I think the worst case scenario has been factored into the stock with respect to litigation and competitive threats. Mutual fund managers and analysts are easily taken in by these kinds of scenario.
You are right in your assessment that there is a huge opportunity risk in not being in MSFT. In the intermediate term there is a lot of potential in company earnings. In the long term, there are lots of other possibilities like spin offs and break up of the company if necessary--not to mention all the investments they are and will be making. New product possibilities--selling voice recognition technology and having upgrades on it!!!!

I keep waiting for the day when either we see a settlement with the DOJ/States OR one or more states dropping out of the case for political reasons. Their justification for dropping out would also include the popular belief about the competitive nature of the business. Nobody will scream at the States Attorney Generals if they drop out now----however if they were to have done this a few months ago they would have faced a hard time trying to justify their actions (without considering political stripes).

There is also the issue of the very tough demands the government had made of MSFT that have stopped any kind of serious settlement. It is my belief that they will reduce their demands and probably settle. They want to go out as winners and not with an anti-business label.

All i can say is that the smart ones are loading up on the stock.
