Les, one more data point in the gasoline consumption topic... This just reported for King County (i.e. Seattle and neighbors):

-- County residents drove 48 percent more miles per person in 1998 than in 1985. Total vehicle miles traveled rose 85 percent, more than three times as fast as the population.

We're probably a bit of an aberration due to the growth curbs in Seattle that have pushed construction into the suburbs. Note that if gas prices suddenly doubled, it would take a while to lower miles driven because many people live too far from their jobs and would need to move to see a reduction in commuting.

Or if gas went to $25 a gallon, a few people around would possibly resort to joining a carpool. Or maybe $40/gallon... <g>
