No, not at all Michelle, I believe the term "hate crime" has no real meaning. A crime is a crime period and the punishment should be predicated on the behavior, not on the perceived internal motivation of the criminal. Crimes of violence all involve one form or another "hate".

I hear that the new legislation is going to add women to the list of "hate crime" victims. Why have they been left off until now? In a few years someone will offer to add the handicapped to the list, then overweight people, people who are ugly, people who talk funny, people who are rich, poor, etc. etc.

Proving that the term has no real meaning when applied to law. As I said, it may not hurt much, but it certainly is no answer toward ending violence in our society.

It will probably get a few liberal politicians elected though, because people will buy into the feeling concept that he/she is now tough on crime.
