BR Announces East Irish Sea First Production

HOUSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 10, 1999--Burlington Resources Inc. (NYSE:BR - news) today announced that its wholly owned subsidiary, Burlington Resources (Irish Sea) Limited (BRIS), had initiated production from the Millom and Dalton fields in the East Irish Sea of the United Kingdom.

Gas production from the Millom Q1, Dalton R1 and R2 wells began on Aug. 11, 1999. Production rates in excess of 100 million cubic feet per day of natural gas have been achieved during this initial commissioning phase. A sustained gross production rate of approximately 100 million cubic feet per day is anticipated once the commissioning phase is completed by the end of September 1999. BRIS utilized subsea technology to tie these wells back to the North Morecambe platform operated by Hydrocarbon Resources Limited (a subsidiary of Centrica Plc). The Secretary of State for Trade and Industry approved development plans in October 1998 for Dalton and in March 1999 for Millom, with an original target date of October 1999 for operations to commence.

Bobby Shackouls, BR's Chairman, President and CEO commented, ``This represents a significant milestone for BR since it is our first operated production outside of North America and we were able to complete this first phase of development more than 24 months ahead of the schedule originally envisioned when this property was acquired. Fast track development equates to enhanced shareholder value and was made possible because of good working relationships we developed with our partners, key regulatory agencies and contractors and the cooperation we received from them.'

BRIS established operations approximately 18 months ago after acquiring 7 undeveloped gas fields from BG Exploration and Production Limited in November 1997. Further development of the Millom field will commence in early 2000, with the installation of an unmanned minimum facilities platform, which is currently being fabricated. BRIS will drill 3 wells in 2000, two of which may utilize multi-lateral technology. In addition to the Millom and Dalton fields, the Company acquired 5 gas fields commonly referred to as the ``Rivers Complex.' BR is currently evaluating alternatives for development of these fields.

BRIS has 90% equity in the Millom, Dalton and Rivers Complex fields, with partner DIFCO Limited (a subsidiary of Alliance Resources Plc) owning the remaining 10%.
