So in other words, African Americans and homosexuals face two very different forms of discrimination.

For Blacks, it's de facto discrimination. While there are no more Jim Crow laws, they still face the socio-economic consequences of that era.

Gays have prospered financially, but many states condemn their lifestyle, even criminalize it. This is blatant de jure discrimination, and it' much easier to fix than the former.
