I suppose that would fall under a "cost of living" measurement. Not sure if any statistics bear that out or not. But you may be on to something.

Certainly teacher salaries are pathetic in far too many areas of the country. And salaries effect performance to some degree. However, I believe, most people quit teaching for reasons other than salary. As most people in other jobs do as well. If the environment was responsive to teachers, or if the system supported them having fun while teaching, instead of setting up roadblocks and creating an atmosphere of us vs them. Teachers would enjoy teaching and the quality of education would rise.

A Ford CEO said it best in the early eighties. "We could double everyones salary tomorrow and the quality of our product wouldn't change". The system of education must be changed. From the top down, and in a systemic way. But first you must create an "urgency to change". My proposal I believe would do that.

Michelle -- don't know where you're coming from but must dare to say CA doesn't pay 10X what TX does on schools.

As for houses being 30X more expensive in CA --please! Am I to believe the average teacher in TX lives in a $100,000 home and the average teacher in CA must pony up $3,000,000 for similar digs. I know better. Personally.

I mean no disrespect but must ask if you are a CA teacher or teacher's union official. I'll be glad to consider any facts you present but please be able to verify them.
