Dear Doug: I think that he is saying all the rumours of INTC preannouncing better than expected earnins is just HOT AIR. Thats not to say they wont have better than expected earnings, its only to say that INTC will not be stampeded into making an announcement they are not required by SEC rules to make. JDN

I had read the Bloomberg story quoting analysts who expected a positive earnings surprise. Maybe Intel decided that they do something before the rumors spread even more. Remember a few quarters ago (or was it 2 quarters ago) there were so many rumors of an earnings preannouncement that never materialized. Intel kept denying such plans to preannounce but the rumors kept circulating. Maybe that is why Intel made the announcement (i still have not found it either). Cramer probably got a hold of the information from an analyst who may have made a phone call to the company.
I guess this time they want to stop the positive preannouncement speculation.
If the news story can't be found, i imagine that some analyst was told the information which then spread.

My guess is that Intel wants to surprise at the earnings release just like the IBMs and Microsofts. They want to start following the normal practice among the big cap techs stocks.(Of course the exception would have been if the preannouncement was negative)

Cramer is missing something unless he concluded that Intel had nothing to say because they didn't say anything. Intel did not put out a press release concerning earnings yesterday. It would have been on its web site.

Doug - Re: "The only time I can recall that Intel has made such a statement without issuing a formal earnings pre announcement via a press release/earnings release was in June of 1998. Rod Chaplinsky, formally of Hambrecht and Quist, said Intel was certainly due for a negative pre announcement after the bell. An Intel representaive promptly refuted that statemet in a short interview after the market closed. Intel never issued a formal release in that situation. The stock hasn't been any lower since that day in June '98. That day, Chaplinsky single handedly sent the stock down several points in the last half hour of trading and I guess Intel was really pissed off. I assume that's why Intel conducted the interview. The stock recovered all the losses the next day."

You have a SUPERB memory !

After BLOWING THAT CALL, Rob Chaplinsky left Hambrecht and Quist - probably under great embarrassment.

Paul

Intel quiet period starts Monday or Friday or thereabouts. No further preannouncements are to be expected.
