In the
few plays I've seen recently it's always the band that seems to mess up the music.

Hey, I resemble that remark! I've played (french horn plus some other odd things like concertina, pipe and tabor, etc.) in a number of pit bands for our local theater group and we are always the best rehearsed and polished part of the productions.

(Thankfully you haven't seen any of the productions, so you don't know how minimal a claim to fame that is! <g>)
