hi pw, i received an email response from mitsumi support today. i'd been to their website for a driver download but i wasn't clear on which one. they pointed me at the DOS driver. said win95 provides drivers for mitsumi cd-roms and that i only needed this one if i planned to use the MS-DOS mode. so i'll try this and then go for the extract tool. the way i read the instructions, i need to copy the extract.exe file from the win95 cd-rom to my c: drive so that i can use the extract tool. i don't think this is necessary in win98, per the instructions. then i think i use a /c switch with the extract tool to copy the kernel32.dll file to the c: drive. i'll know more before long. maybe tomorrow. i sure appreciate the posts from you and from rich. :) mark
