LIONS GATE ACQUIRES NICOLAS CAGE-PRODUCED SHADOW OF THE VAMPIRE
DIRECTOR ELIAS MERHIGE'S FILM STARS JOHN MALKOVICH AS ECCENTRIC
filmmaker F.W. Murnau

VANCOUVER, Sep 14, 1999 /CNW-PRN via COMTEX/ -- Lions Gate has
acquired North American rights to Shadow of the Vampire, produced by
Oscar-winner Nicolas Cage and partner Jeff Levine, for their own Saturn
Films, it was announced today by Lions Gate Releasing co-presidents Tom
Ortenberg and Mark Urman. Directed by Elias Merhige (Begotten), the
film stars Academy Award-nominees John Malkovich and Willem Dafoe,
Carey Elwes, Eddie Izzard and Catherine McCormack. The original
screenplay was written by Steven Katz (Interview with the Vampire,
American Gothic). Lions Gate previously held worldwide distribution
rights to the film. No release date has been set.

``Shadow of the Vampire will appeal to audiences on several levels,'
said Urman. ``It is eerie, features superb performances, and is surely
one of the most original uses of vampire folklore in years.' Ortenberg
added, ``We are delighted to be working with Nicolas Cage, Jeff Levine
and Elias Merhige, who brought this fascinating film to life.'

Shadow of the Vampire was inspired by the brilliant and eccentric
director, F.W. Murnau, and his iconic film Nosferatu, considered by
many to be the greatest vampire film of all time. Murnau, played by
John Malkovich, was relentless in his pursuit of realism. The film asks
the enigmatic question: ``Did Murnau's desire for cinematic
authenticity go beyond society's accepted moral limits? Willem Dafoe
also stars as Max Shreck, the actor who portrayed Nosferatu in the
classic film.

Nicolas Cage and Jeff Levine have been professionally associated for
seven years. Cage has starred in the highly successful films The Rock,
Con-Air and Moonstruck, and won the Academy and Golden Globe best actor
awards for Leaving Las Vegas. Levine produced several of Cage's films
including Face/Off, City of Angels, Snake Eyes and 8mm. The two founded
Saturn Films two and a half years ago.
