Pat,

The last I knew 3Com didn't have a Layer 3/4 Enterprise switching solution. Cabletron has the Yago SSR which is recognized as holding 33% market share in Layer 3. The bonus of buying Cabletron over 3Com is the Spectrum Enterprise Management Software which is something like 1 or 2% behind HP OpenView in market share. Plus it is also recognized as having better functionality by a lot of network technicians.

I realize 3Com has the Palm Pilot and while it is an exciting product line it doesn't merit a company like Lucent to buy it and have to deal with the rest of the baggage that Eric Benhamou has assembled at 3Com. NIC Cards, modems, PCMCIA, and low-end switches are better purchased through a company like Anixter for the consumer. Therefore margins are low for the manufacturer.

IMHO,

Steve
