Mainland firm introduces recordable SVCD player
The new player is expected to be the mainstream of the mainland's video player market, and annual sales are expected to reach 5 million units.
Xiamen Xiaxin Electronics Co. Ltd, one of mainland China's leading VCD player makers, recently launched the world's first recordable SVCD player, a CD-VCR.

It uses MPEG-II digital video real time coding & decoding technology to record A/V signals onto CD-R or CD-RW discs. It has all the functions of an SVCD and an VCR player, and can also play VCDs and CDs.

It is expected that the new player will become the mainstream of the mainland's video player market, and annual sales are expected to reach 5 million units. According to Bai Wei-min, chief of information product bureau of the Ministry of Information Industry, the product not only fills a market vacancy, but also brings vigor to the currently downturn video player industry. The mainland's video player industry should thus not only grasp latest digital A/V technology, but also lead the trend.

Xiamen Xiaxin Electronics also expressed its intention to involve itself in the development of digital home theater at last month's China Digital Home Theatre Developing Direction Seminar, co-sponsored by China Association of Electronic Acoustics.

The firm manufactured 1.92 million units of VCD players in the previous year, and expects to produce 3 million in 1999. It is the first Chinese maker to acquire Dolby Lab's AC-3 and Pro Logic approvals, enabling it digital A/V products to compete with other of the world's makers.

Lu Huan-wen, general manager of Xiamen Xiaxin, said his company's home theatre amplifier, one of the main electronics products of Xiamen Xiaxin, uses independent multi-channel AV amplifier or the combination of amplifier and surround sound decoder.
