DVD player manufacturers are making an energetic effort to appeal to a variety of tastes and budgets. Below, a sampling of their latest releases.

Hong Kong

Thakral Electronics started shipping its DVD players at the start of this year. The company claims to be the leading manufacturer of DVD players in Hong Kong, and is targeting an output of 500,000 units in 1999 and 1 million units in 2000. The firm makes six main models in 21 different configurations, sales and marketing manager Andy Lulla said.

Thakral has manufactured for such brands as Proline, Grundig, Teac of Japan and Dantax of Denmark. Its own brands are Noriko and Thakral. The company developed its DVD players with technology from LSI Logic of the United States.

Model DVD 390 has a 10-bit video converter, MPEG-2 digital audio and 96kHz/24-bit DA audio converter. Capable of 500-plus TV lines of resolution, it has graphical OSD, video output, S-Video output, onboard Dolby Pro Logic encoding and virtual surround sound with two speakers. Karaoke variation 390K includes digital key shift and echo and digital vocal-assist features.

Skyworth has two models of DVD players, targeted primarily at Australia and Europe. The firm is also planning to introduce a three-disc changer. The DVD-450 series is compatible with several optical-disk formats, including DVD, S-VCD, CVD, VCD, CD-DA, CD-R and CD-I. It features full-function DVD playback with multi-angle and multilanguage selection and rating level control.

Video output formats are normal, S-Video, and YUV output for HDTV. Audio output formats are Dolby Digital, two-channel mixed stereo, optical digital output, coaxial digital output and linear PCM decoding output.

Yanion has released model DVD-2000 with Dolby Digital and MPEG-2 audio. The unit plays PAL- and NTSC-format DVDs and VCDs and audio CDs. It has composite video and S-Video A/V outputs, and digital coaxial and optical connectors.

Other functions include user-selectable camera angle and language (dependent on software), three slow speeds, OSD and parental lock.

Taiwan

Acer is offering its latest model, the DVD-5500, supports THX and Dolby Digital and Pro Logic. A two-channel spatializer enables surround-sound effects with stereo systems. The unit can read all disc formats, from audio CD to DVD.

The DVD-5500 has component video output, the most effective method of transferring image data from the DVD player to the TV, DVD director Dany Yang said. Unlike S-Video or composite output links, the component video output keeps colors together rather than scrambling and recreating.

Tatung has announced model TDV-2000 incorporates a built-in Dolby Digital 5.1-channel decoder with S-Video and CVBS video output terminals, a digital audio optical output port and a digital audio output port. The unit comes with full-function remote control and karaoke key control.

Sampo is offering the DVE-520. The unit has full digital sound capability and 5.1-channel stereo decoder. The system can read all CD formats.
