Interesting post from yahoo thread on national coverage Top>Business & Finance>Investments>Sectors>Services>Communications Services>GSTRF (Globalstar Telecommun.) Rational Optimism by: EEEngineer99 12154 of 12161 Hi Hehaun, Nationwide Cellular Coverage is a very hot issue right now. To compete with AT&T in the US you need to have Nationwide-Coverage. Airtouch and other cellular systems are lacking in this area. Globalstar phones could solve that problem. This is interesting: news.cnet.com Some excerpts: ---------------------------------------------------------------- "The benefits of a national network are already translating into subscriber growth. AT&T maintains a lead in the U.S. market with close to 11.5 million subscribers. Sprint is still riding high on a growth spurt of its own, adding 617,000 subscribers last quarter to reach a total of about 4 million. Vodafone AirTouch and Bell Atlantic each are larger, respectively with 8.9 million and 6.6 million subscribers, but each added less than 300,000 subscribers last quarter. Wall Street also has reacted positively to companies with a nationwide presence. Nextel, hardly as much of a household name as AT&T or Sprint, has seen its stock price nearly double in the last several months as it has ramped up geographic and data-focused expansion plans." ---------------------------------------------------------------- Globalstar is going to perform their slow-rollout in foriegn contries so they can test out their network, distribution and billing systems. I believe the big money is going to be made right here in the United States. And I think they know it and are being very cautious in making sure everything is just right before they kick off in the US. Iridium and Motorola have said that a new Iridium phone is in the works. Motorola has taken a lot of abuse over their "brick" phone. I will not be surprised to see them come out with a minature version just to show everyone that they can still pull rabbits out of a hat. Motorola has to be very embarrassed over the bad publicity on the "brick". Can you imagine the internal ridicule the engineers get over building that phone? I think some damaged pride is going to produce something much nicer. That said, I am sure the engineers of the Globalstar phones are already looking at ways to reduce the size, weight and cost of the initial run of phones. If Globalstar can keep its' head above water we could see Globalstar make a killing on just the US market of supplemental extended coverage. Excerpt: --------------------------------------------------------------- "The biggest deal yet to be closed is one that hasn't happened: MCI WorldCom's merger or partnership with any significant wireless phone company. The long distance carrier has no wireless phone network of its own--a critical gap, many analysts say." --------------------------------------------------------------- Wall street loves to be surprised. Imagine if MCI made a deal with Vodafone and Globalstar to offer instant cellular and worldwide coverage. What would happen to Globalstar's stock price? How high would it go? Could happen.... :) Posted: 9/11/1999 5:12 pm EDT as a reply to: Msg 12143 by hehaun
