The front yard is for the neighbors and passers by. The backyard sounds really great. Concentrate on it. Don't forget about the progress of Africanized bees. Fruit trees are wonderful --- in theory.

<<There were some pretty espaliered apple and pear trees that would be nice to plant along the side of the house that doesn't have windows. I would love to plant fruit trees everywhere, apples, cherries, pears, and am wondering why the landscaping books don't get into fruit trees. I suspect that it's because the fruit makes a mess, but I don't know for sure.>>

Most of the new fruit trees are short, easier picking. Mix in some ash trees as an easy keeper and grows tall fairly fast. Skip soft maples, your ice storms will do them in.
