The truly "loony" left (the American CP) was outlawed, for a goodly number of years, Charley. Other "loonies," like The Black Panthers, for example, had their troubles with the police, as I recall. And so on.

Who, exactly, are these "loony lefties" that are making everyone else walk on eggs? Sounds to me as if they, too, might be just average middle Americans.

And while we're on the subject of eggs, seems to me that SI is full of "peeps," not to speak of "squawks." <g>

"Just average middle Americans" who happen to believe, for example, that my children should be forced to pray to their God in public schools.

I would agree that the religious right constituency is probably a good deal more moderate than their leaders, who use their clout to pursue a more extreme agenda than most of their supporters actually want. The same could be said of liberals: the average American liberal is a decent enough sort who happens to be concerned with the environment, minority rights, possibly excessive political influence of big business, etc. The leaders use their support to take things a good deal farther than the followers would.

The right also has its apologists.

I don't see either a right or a left agenda "marching forward", for which I am thankful.
