How does a rhodes scholar compare to a fulbright scholar do you know? Those are the two that are held by a few notables around here.

-- only 34 American college graduates a year are awarded a Rhodes.

It's 32 college graduates are selected and "Scholars are required to be full-time students at Oxford for the duration of their degree programs. Deferment of the Scholarship is not allowed."

Their by-laws state, that if you do not get a degree within 2 years you lose your Scholarship status... Maybe it's splitting hairs ,but to me that means he's not a Rhodes Scholar any more.

Distribution of the Rhodes Scholarships

United States 32 .........Bermuda 1
Canada 11 .................Hong Kong 1
Australia 9 ...............Jamaica 1
South Africa 9 .............Kenya 1
Germany 4 ..................Malaysia 1
India 4 ..................Pakistan 1
New Zealand 3 ..............Singapore 1
Commonwealth .............Caribbean 2
Uganda 1 .................Bangladesh 1
Zimbabwe 2 ................Zambia 1

The criteria which Rhodes set forth in his Will still guide Committees of Selection in their assessment of applicants. The Will contains four standards by which prospective Rhodes Scholars should be judged:

1.literary and scholastic attainments;

2.fondness for and success in sports;

3.truth, courage, devotion to duty, sympathy for and protection of the weak, kindliness, unselfishness and fellowship;

4.moral force of character and instincts to lead, and to take an interest in one's fellow beings.

Now do any of these describe the Bill Clinton of today? LOL!!!!!

I have known a couple of Rhodes Scholars. Although your resume has to be respectable, the key is the interview. Also, it matters what state you apply from. A schmooze from Arkansas is practically a shoe in...The foregoing, incidentally, has a great deal to do with why Rhodes Scholars have never had an impact on the world commensurate with the prestige of the scholarship, at least not until this Administration....
