It's pretty simple, when you see two edges come together in a shearing action with hydraulic power you keep body parts away. Same with a spinning PTO shaft on a tractor, still there's always someone who leans over one.

Safety around machinery, that's what it's about. A lift gate saves tons of lifting but don't stand with your head up your butt and your toes over the wrong edge while going up. Oh, and don't be under it on the way down.

Best to pick the most level headed and have him and him alone run the lever.
