Yeah, this device will be competing with other devices that are already taking up the entertainment budget of households. People already have a cheap VCR, maybe already pay for DirecTV service, or WebTV, DVD playing, and hit Blockbuster on the weekends.

At its current price, for what it offers, Tivo will be targeting the early-adopting technophile segment of the market for the next year.

Now that I think about it, who really needs a TiVo machine. You can't stick tapes from Blockbuster in it. I don't know a sole with a DVD machine.
After a while all these gizmos get to be too much.

It might take a while for use of the machines to ramp up. My VCR cost $199 at most, and it works perfectly. And I don't need to spend hours learning
to use it.

But then I'm 49 and the status of a refrigerator with an automatic ice maker has passed. Too many broke. I just spill the water on the floor when I fill up
the ice trays.

Less is More!

I agree. Who the hell need a TIVO machine when you have HiFi VCR and DVD machines getting cheaper and cheaper? I already watch whatever I want and whenever I want without spending more money. In my opinion, this IPO will be a dud.
