I feel much the same way as you, except that I am not sure that I could have faith if I wanted it. I have never in my life suffered anything that could be credibly called a religious impulse; the drive to worship is as alien to me as the drive to consume heroin. I can acknowledge that these drives exist. I can wish those addicted to them the best of luck. But true sympathy is impossible.

But hey, it's a free country. As you say, whatever gets 'em through the night.

I sure do hope the practice of those who've surrendered their intellects, or made them
"assent," in one fashion or another,

In my experience, it's neither a surrender nor a forcing. It is a sure and certain knowledge. It often comes only after a long struggle to resist -- while your mind tries its hardest to deny what it really knows to be true.

Although I tend to avoid traditional Christian terminology, the phrase "born anew," used in its proper context and usage, is probably a pretty good phrase. If a baby had a choice, do you think it would really choose to leave that safe, warm, comfortable place where it was fed and cared for and be violently thrust into a cold, frightening world full of unimaginable experiences and terrifying dangers? But once there, babies look around, realize that this is okay, and start an incredible new journey of discoveries and exploration.

But how could that new baby possibly explain to be baby still in the womb what this world was really like and all about? And could the baby in the womb possibly comprehend even a fraction of it?

My mother used to say
when I was an adolescent that if I hadn't been raised an atheist,

Interesting. I hadn't been aware that you were brought up an atheist. Most atheists I know were brought up in some church and rejected it on their own.
