For a long message a punctuation mark is fine. The key is to understanding the useful usage of <eom> is realizing that SI picks up the first line of a post and uses it as a "heading" when you look at the entire thread. Some readers read every post, but others simply browse the headings and click on a few that look promising. If the last character is a punctuation character, there could be more stuff that might be interesting. If the heading ends with <eom> you know that you already see everything.

Yahoo is similar, except that you decide in posting which part is the "heading", and which is the body. If the whole post is contained in the heading, ending it with <eom> is appropriate.

Now if I can just figure out how to make only a portion of my post "fixed font" for posting tables, I'd be happy. I've sure I've seen both fixed font and proportional font in the same post, so I think there is a way...
