I bet it wasn't just the way you looked. Anyone who watches teen movies, and feels frustrated because she can't give good, motherly advice to the actors and fix them something nourishing to eat is probably well suited to be a probation officer. And after you learned not to trust them or take their word for anything, you probably made a good one.

I had a friend who was a probation officer, one of his first was the guy who robbed his brother.

Then he was in charge of a work release place and carried a gun. A little .380 automatic.

I remember when he called me and wanted to borrow my "Dirty Harry" 44 mag. One of his "clients", 6'8" and 300 pounds and a weight lifter had a problem with a whore that went ugly. I loaned him my gun and he used it. Didn't have to shoot it but smacked the guy upside the head with it.
