MP - NYTimes this a.m. seems to indicate that WTO talks have been kick-started in NZ - cell comm mentioned - IMO the entry of China into WTO is more valuable for them than stalling to help certain sectors... the question is, do IJ and his buddies like Bernie Schwartz, have access to Clinton's ear.

mp, all, on China: One of the most important issues on China acceptance of WTO terms, and US acceptance of terms of Chinese acceptance, relates to technology transfer issues, as discussed here several months ago. Veteran China watchers know that China rarely permits foreign investment/foreign presence as a base to manufacture and distribute product/technology within China market unless China obtain technology transfer rights. MOT, GM, ENE and other majors in the past have buckled to some form of transfer of the IPR relating to the industrial/manufacturing/licensing establishment.

China's position on CDMA has not yet been made clear, but some on the thread may recall MII's positioning on ITU standards debate for China's home grown version of W-CDMA to be considered by ITU for standards inclusion. This seemed to be China staking out a claim for CDMA in some form, for some consideration to be paid down the road. It will be interesting to see IF, HOW or in WHAT FORM this remains on the table.

Regards. Steven
